Great post, fun examples. You probably already saw, but Andrew Parker's got a similar thread going over on his blog. http://thegongshow.tumblr.com/post/836979279/borrowing-design-elements

Don't know too much about them. I was very familiar with them a couple
years ago; they seem to be doing different stuff now -- more along the lines
of plug-n-play game mechanics. If that's the case, I don't think it's
particularly interesting. Nice consulting business, though.

I don't think there is a need to convert to real currency - ultimately I think it lets people peek behind the curtain and see that their actions really aren't worth much. If my 245,793 points equate to 29 cents, well, now it just REALLY seems silly.People seem to be happy enough to earn points for points sake - why start throwing more money at it? I gues alot of it depends on what your hope to achieve through game mechanics.

Transferability into real currency is interesting -- lots of potential there, but also big legal and regulatory potholes. The best success stories thus far (e.g., Zynga's poker chips) use the black market. You have other mechanisms in mind?

Good post ... Agree with most of your commentary although there are becoming clear profiles which are motivated differently by social, competitive, status, etc. There will also be additional ways to make the currency portable including into real $$$

Hey Brad - Relevant article in the NYTimes today in their review of Frontierville - where they claim it is a game designed for revenue, not fun and challenge: http://nyti.ms/blNEEN
